Happy International Yarnbombing Day 2013!

It's that time of year again.
For the 3rd year in a row, I have done IYBD!
The first year, it was a large collection of yarnbombs spread all over the city. I basically used all my scraps and unbombed pieces in one big go from my house to my work.

The second year I did that huge picnic set up, as well as a couple pole bombs and flower vines.
The picnic blanket and food spread all over the table took me like 8 months worth of work. It was probably my biggest yarnbomb to date.

This year, I was going for flare over size.
I wanted to do something fandom-y, as I really like a lot of fandoms and geeky things.

So I decided to go with Adventure Time.

If you're not familiar, it's a cartoon show. I would say for kids, as I do know kids who enjoy it, but it has an odd sense of humor and a kind of nostalgia that appeals to an older generation.

The base of the bomb is Lady Rainicorn.

Flying on her back as they soar above Ooo, are Princess Bubblegum,

Jake the Dog,

Finn the Human,

BeeMO,

And Marceline the Vampire Queen.

I put this up in the playground down the street from my house. It's close to the road too, so hopefully people see it.
I expect it to get mangled and taken home really quick tho. The amigurumi dolls of the characters are pretty detailed and not attached over well. I hope they end up in good homes in the end.

Well, this has been another fun IYBD. I didn't see as much hype (or really anything) about it this year, so hopefully others have done great projects too and I will see them today.

Woolley Poles Contribution

So the Woolley Poles was a success!

On November 17th, my coral reef piece was put up on a pole in Auckland, New Zealand.

I gotta say, I was in suspense about this one for a long while.
But it turned out amazing!

Here it is up on the pole with the other red pieces. There was a kind of rainbow theme as the undercurrent. I really liked that part.

Here you can see the rest of the pole that it was apart of as well. I like to think it's rather predominant. It was so much fun to make.

I hope I can do more of these events in the future. There is something amazing about sending my art all over the world.

Long time no crochet

You know, I have still been crocheting.
I just recently finished the piece that is going to WoollyPoles in New Zealand.
I am always super excited to be apart of projects like this one. I feel like one little cog in a great yarn bombing machine.

(I apologize for photo quality. I really need to stop using my ipod...I don't even know the resolution!)

I decided to go with coral reef because I have become obsessed with it (as I have mentioned before). I decided to go with something I hadn't tried before.

I sewed a seaweed type crochet piece into the background before adding the coral. Oh wow did it work out well! I love when I can impress myself with my work.

I mailed it off this week, so soon it shall go to live in its new home in New Zealand! This whole project has been great. be sure to check out other yarn bombers progress here!

Fibrations 2012

I'm tired everyone.
I walked around the Fibrations festival for a few hours today. I ran into a lot of people I haven't seen for a long time and in some cases, not since last year.
Anyway, the first amazing thing that happened was that I went over to the demo booth, and who should be displaying there but Nerdigurumi! Ever since I found their site through looking for a Bioshock Big Daddy pattern, I have visited it often to see what other new awesome patterns they will create (they also have an amazing Prince from Katamari that I have posted on my Katamari tumblr!) So you can imagine what it was liking meeting the actual creator behind these amazing creations.

After that wonderful experience, I ran across the Knotty by Nature table and talked with owner Ryan. We discussed hand spinning. I would love to get into it, but first I wanna tackle felting.
There were a lot of tables focusing on felting.

Then I wandered around the festival looking for my friend Dela. I met Dela last year at the festival. She was teaching the Tunisian crochet demo. To celebrate the fact that I have known Dela for a whole year, I made her a wall crochet coral reef.

I love making these things. Thankfully, they are as well recieved by the people that I make them for. Dela loved her reef. And she gave me a small tuniscian crochet hook too!
Dela is such a wonderful woman.

After a while, I met up with my friends and we visited a bunch more booths and learned more about fibre and fibre arts. Also, since it was in an orchard, we snagged a bunch of apples so I can make pie.

I did two yarn bombs while I was at the festival as well.
The first, before I actually got to the festival, but was on St. Ann's Academy grounds, I threw up into a tree. It was the rainbow bolas that I made ages ago!

Finally put it up. I meant to do it for Pride this year, but I was deathly ill, so that didn't happen. Instead, it made it's way into this tree today!

Second one was just after my friends and I left the festival. We were at a stop light waiting for it to change and my friend Brandy suggested I throw it into the tree above us. It worked out sorta well.

Not exactly where I wanted, but bolas never do go where I want them.

Either way, I had a crazy great day! Fibrations 2012 was an amazing success.

Eighth of November: Day eight of 21 days of Yarn bombing

Man, I am super tired.
I spent the day working on tags and projects for winter craft fairs.
I am beat!
And I didn't really leave the house today so...

Tada!

It's a rainbow flower on a pole almost directly outside my house.
I was outside for maybe 5 minutes today.

I will try to do better for the rest of this week.

Happy Birthday Dr.Seuss! Green eggs and Ham style

In 2009, Google posted a happy birthday link for Dr. Seuss.

My roommate received a calender from this cute girl in her class that lists interesting dates. One of them was Dr.Seuss's birthday.
And in my travels of flickr, I saw some interesting Dr. Seuss tributes.
So I decided, as a birthday gift to the man who created some of my favorite books to read ever, let alone when I was a child, I did my own little tribute.

Green eggs and ham!
I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them sam I am.

Not a whole bunch of awesome places!! (in a boat, in a house, in the rain!) Or with awesome things XD (Goat! Mouse!)
These were a lot of fun to make.

I also made some eggs of varying colors. A rainbow if you will.

Hyperbolic Avestrucera Bolas

I cannot wait to see if I can use this thing!

I have no idea where, and a friend of mine has suggested that I try practicing with it before I acctually try bombing it.
But I think it's awesome.

Friend: You can't do it over traffic.
Ok ok, I won't.
Friend: It's filled with rocks!
Yes, everybody, the center of these bad boys is a rock a piece. Then I did a hyperhoblic "fringe" as it were around the outside. I think it turned out rather well.

And look! Rainbows!
I then friendship bracleted the two hyperbolic rock balls together to form a bolas that I can throw, tagging this sweet piece some place outta reach.

Rainbow fishies!

This was originally supposed to be for my gay friend David.
I was gonna put it at his bus stop.
But honestly? At 11:00pm I didn't want walk 3 blocks there, and then 3 block back, when I had to walk form 20 minutes home anyways.

Either way, I did put it between his house and my gf's house! So he'll pass it and I will as well.

I think it was a brilliant compromise.

My friend David really likes fish.

A lot of people in my life right now like fish. Roomate, guy who lives down stairs, David.
I think I did an ok job of portraying fish.

This is the last of the rainbow yarn I got from my friend at the pride lounge. There may be more rainbows in the future, but none as matching as these ones I imagine.

A gift for a friend

So, I have these two good friends. They helped me out when things really sucked for me, when I didn't have a place to live.

Anyways, I decided that I would do something nice for them. See, they bought a new house and now it is looking pretty fab, because they have spent the last 6 months fixing it up. One of my friends showed me her garden out front, which included a little gnome and his acompanying toadstool. I was inspired to add to her little garden.

Tada! I saw someone do rocks for a beach and got inspired to do my own rocks. Once I did them though, I wasn't sure what to do with them.          

I think they make a perfect addiction here though. I didn't tell my friend that I tagged her garden though. I am just waiting to see if she see's they and realizes it was me or not.

You can see the gnome in this one... not really the toadstool, but the gnome. And the birdbath.

My friends garden is really quite pretty.

I can't wait to make more of these rocks. Perhaps I should do a series of them where I leave knitted (ok, crocheted) rocks in random places. That sounds like fun.

Out and about: Fan ta sea isle Rainbow!

Early on after moving to victoria, I set out to see the sites. One of the first sites I saw was Rico`s Benches by the bay, or also know as Fan Ta Sea Isle.

I added that to Rico`s little project.

The sad part is though that the city of Victoria wants to build a yacht marina right where this landmark of woodcarving (for the public I might add) is presently located. And they don`t care that this guys has been building this thing for years, or that people recognize it as a landmark.

Not to mention it is going to make the entire area look gross and commerical, full of boats and cars instead of lush greenery and a wonderful view of the ocean and Olympic mountain range.

Either way, I decided to add my piece to a wonderfully bright example of urban art.

Check out some of the things carved and colored in the wood.

Not to mention the graffitti writing as well. I think it adds color to the over all atmosphere. Better for Rico's whole piece than the drab stones of the walkway.

Over all, I am really really happy with this piece. It is probably the largest to date and it is certianly one of the most colorful. I am almost out of my rainbow yarn (but I got tons of other colors at the thrift store the other day so look forward to more colorful tags in the future) but I have plans for at least two more rainbow ones.Enjoy!

Out and about: Controversy over nudity

So as my gf and I were walking around town today, I was rather hellbent on doing a statue tag. I'd seen so many on the interwebs that I wanted one too.
Oh sure, there were perhaps better statues in town. My gf even suggested as much. But I really wanted to do one on these statues.

See, these statues were some of the first things I ever saw when I moved to victoria. So in a strange way, I felt as if I was honoring them.

As a funny, ironic/practical joke type tag, I decided that this lovely nude statue required a tube top.

I think it looks quite fetching on her.

Don't you agree?

I was a little sad that I didn't have anything to give her as a bottom. And I didn't have enough yarn with me to whip something up even.

But I think it turned out rather well. Another of my lovely rainbow tags.

Show your colors!

I did this lovely rainbow piece so that it could be seen from the window of my school's Pride lounge.

When the new Pride director was nominated ( my friend) we decided to clean up the lounge, as the old director was a bit of a tool and got nothing done.

Now, it looks amazing in there!

... Just not by the window apparently.

While we were cleaning, we came upon some old arts and crafts supplies. There ended up being this whole bag of rainbow yarn in there! I was super excited and my friend let me have it for helping to clean up.

So in honour of that, I did this wonderful little piece that you can see from the window.
